Who wants a dose of cute for their day? Well, here you go! The San Diego Zoo announced yesterday that its giant panda cub finally has a name, Xiao Liwu, which is Chinese for "Little Gift." The cub was born on July 29th, but in keeping with Chinese panda-naming tradition, zookeepers waited to name him until he was at least 100 days old. The name was chosen by the public, with Xiao Liwu getting the most votes out of nearly 35,000 that were cast, beating out the Chinese names meaning: Miracle; Raindrop; Big Ocean or Big Sea; Brave Son; and Water Dragon. Only 1,600 giants pandas are thought to remain in the wild, and captive breeding is an important way to study and conserve the species.
