Can you believe it's been 18 years since the release of Alanis Morissette's hit song 'Ironic'? I used to sing the 'ironic' lyrics at the top of my lungs thinking I knew exactly what she meant. I didn't want to admit it at the time, but I had no idea what irony even was. And maybe Alanis Morissette didn't either.

The definition of irony from merriam-webster.com reads as

incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result."

The song's lyrics have been criticized time and time again for not actually being ironic. One original lyric reads,

It's like meeting the man of your dreams
and then meeting his beautiful wife
isn't it ironic?"

It sounds more like bad timing than irony. It would be ironic though if this meeting happened while you were at couples therapy trying to fix your current relationship. Musicians Eliza Hurwitz and Rachael Hurwitz thought just that and included it in their new version of the song along with many other witty doses of irony.

Do you like the new and finally ironic version of the song?
