A story from NBC News this morning claims that American Airlines charged parents a $60 fee - to sit with their 5 year old child.  Let me explain -

According to the story, the family was originally booked seated together.  After American Airlines changed the flight schedule for the families return trip - they automatically booked the family on the new flight.  Problem was, Mom and Dad were seated on the other side of the plane, rows away from their 5 year old child.  No problem Dad thought, a simple call will fix that.  Nope.  American Airlines informed the father that yes, he could have 3 seats together - they were available.  HOWEVER, he would have to pay a $60 fee to make this happen.  THIS, after the family had booked the trip a full seven months in advance specifically to ensure that they'd all be able to sit together.
