There was no question of whether or not 'Thor: The Dark World' was going to open at number one this weekend. Of course it was. The big question was whether it would get a post-'Avengers' bump, or if it would do similar business to its 2011 predecessor. Question answered: it got a bump and a pretty good one, too.
On one level, 'SNL' should probably be ashamed of itself for being months late to parodying the infamous "What Does the Fox Say?" music video. After all, countless more timely comedy institutions got their riffs on this one out of the way ages ago. However, if anyone is going to have the final word on this memorable viral sensation, it should be 'SNL,' whose take is certainly more accurate and handsomely made than most of the competition.
It's Fall and Halloween is right around the corner, so you know what this means: pumpkins, and lots of 'em. Like us, the folks at 'SNL' know that this is the season where pumpkin products take center stage and invade every corner of your home, but unlike us, 'SNL' has the time, budget and duty to make a fake commercial that grotesquely showcases that there is one area of our lives that pumpkin flavor hasn't invaded quite yet.
Considering the massive box office success of 'Gravity' over the past two weeks, chances are strong that you've already seen director Alfonso Cuaron's stunning science fiction thriller. If so, the news of a companion short film that sheds light on one of the movie's most memorable scenes should have your attention.
There are few 'SNL' sketches as reliably funny as fake screen tests, which give the cast the opportunity to show off their best and craziest celebrity impersonations. It felt especially important in the most recent Miley Cyrus-hosted episode of the show -- with so many of the big names gone, this was a chance for the lesser known cast members to step up to the plate. And you know what? They did. Mostly.
Now that Bill Hader and Stefon have departed the show, we find ourselves treasuring every other recurring 'SNL' character and treating every appearance as if it's their last. That's just a long-winded way of saying "Welcome back, Drunk Uncle!" Bobby Moynihan's rambling, all-too honest (and all-too real) character once again graced the Weekend Update desk with his presence, updating us with his thoughts on current events and introducing us to a member of his extended family.
Dangerous car chases through heavily populated urban environments has always been a cornerstone of the wonderfully ludicrous 'Fast and Furious' series and the latest film is certainly not going to be an exception. Filming is currently underway on 'Fast and Furious 7' and the production is looking for some fans to fill out some key scenes.
James Wan has done it again. For the second time this year, a horror film that he's directed has opened to over $40 million, securing his position as the reigning king of mainstream horror cinema. He may be taking a break from the genre to direct 'Fast and Furious 7,' but after the jaw-dropping success of 'The Conjuring' and now 'Insidious Chapter 2,' you just know he'll be back. No one is bringing the audiences in quite like Wan.
Oh, and there were some other movies that made some money, too.
Ah, the continuing appeal of the one and only Denzel Washington. How much do people love this guy? They love him so much that they'll transform just about any movie he appears in into a respectable hit, even if that movie is a poorly marketed (but well-reviewed) action movie based on a comic book that no one read. We shouldn't be surprised that '2 Guns' shot to the top of the box office, but we are a little. Oh, Denzel Washington, you always catch us off guard.
It shouldn't surprise you to learn that a new live-action version of 'The Jungle Book' is currently being written for Disney. After all, the company's latest (and so far successful) business plan has been to take previously successful animated properties and transform them into live-action spectacles. It worked for 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Alice In Wonderland,' and it'll probably work for the wrapped 'Maleficent' and the about-to-shoot 'Cinderella.' So, 'The Jungle Book'? Why not?
Which would you expect to win the Fourth of July weekend: the Disney-produced, Johnny Depp-starring revival of an iconic American hero or the sequel to a French-made, Steve Carell-starring animated movie about a lovable supervillain? Well, it looks like American audiences simply aren't interested in westerns, even the uber-expensive ones starring Captain Jack Sparrow with a bird on his head. 'Despicable Me 2' destroyed 'The Lone Ranger' over the holiday weekend. Like, totally wrecked it. Mercilessly.
What happens when two new releases that look like sure-things smash into the unstoppable wall that is a Pixar movie? Well, you get one second place hit and one severe disappointment. 'The Heat' still looks good next to the continued success of 'Monsters University,' but it made 'White House Down' stumbling at the starting line look all the more horrible.
