Matthew McConaughey to teach University Film Class

Remember those days in high school where your regular history teacher would call in sick and some anonymous substitute would just put on a VHS of Glory or Gettysburg and call it a day? It turns out that practice is still alive and well at universities across the country, with one small difference: instead of some random recent college graduate as a substitute teacher, these students will be visited by Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey.

J.K. Rowling has Already Written a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel

One of the major truths of the entertainment industry is that there will never be a more interesting movie than the one you haven’t yet made. This weekend, while The Legend of Tarzan director David Yates was gently trying to nudge conversations towards his film currently in theaters, people were understandably curious about his upcoming return to Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And Yates let a particularly interesting piece of information drop.

Pixar Has No More Sequels Planned After ‘The Incredibles 2’

With Finding Dory breaking all kinds of box office records, fans are understandably excited to see which of their favorite franchises Pixar will bring back to multiplexes. And the answer is, it kind of depends. If you’re a fan of Cars, Toy Story, and The Incredibles, you’ll be able to revisit your favorite Pixar characters no later than 2019. And if you’re a fan of Wall-E, Ratatouille, or Inside Out... well, we hope you’re OK with waiting for the next decade or so.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Is No Match For ‘Finding Dory’

It took 20 years for Roland Emmerich to deliver a sequel to Independence Day, a film that’s largely responsible for the modern summer blockbuster season. Unfortunately, it looks like most audiences didn’t think it was worth the wait. As predicted in recent weeks, Resurgence crash-landed in theaters with an underwhelming opening weekend that was no match for Pixar’s Finding Dory.

Disney Chief Says ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Won’t Be the Last Indy Adventure

Despite rumors to the contrary, Disney has repeatedly assured fans that they have no (current) plans to reboot Indiana Jones or replace Harrison Ford in the iconic role anytime soon — well, at least not in Indiana Jones 5, which re-teams Ford with series director Steven Spielberg for one more outing. According to Disney chief Bob Iger, however, the forthcoming sequel won’t be the last of the Indy franchise, and it definitely sounds like they do have plans to reboot the series — to some extent — after all.

New Netflix Instant Releases: July 2016

All right, Netflixers, here it is: The list of new titles coming to the streaming service this month. As far as acquisitions go, the headliner is easily The Big Short, Adam McKay’s bitterly funny comedy about the 2008 economic collapse. There’s also the recent and critically acclaimed horror movie The Invitation, billed as a “Netflix Exclusive.” (Whatever you want to call it, our own Britt Hayes was a big fan.) There are also 19 different Netflix originals (19!!!!) this month, including the return of BoJack Horseman, my favorite show that I’ve barely watched because I have a baby and BoJack Horseman is not a show you watch in front of a baby unless you want to scar her for life.

‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ Trailer: Tim Burton’s Latest Creepy Quirkfest

Ender’s Game sputtered out and he didn’t land the role of Marvel’s new Spider-Man, so Asa Butterfield’s latest stab at franchise immortality will come in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Based on a best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs, the premise is sort of a Tim Burton spin on X-Men, with a house of strange and quirkily gifted children who live apart from society that doesn’t understand their abilities. And, yes, if this movie is a hit, Riggs has already written two Miss Peregrine sequels, Hollow City and Library of Souls. In other words, there’s nothing peculiar about Hollywood’s interest in this material.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Finding Dory’ Just Keeps Swimming Past Box Office Records

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Finding Dory opened at number one at the box office this week and did enormous business, but the folks at Disney and Pixar must be breathing a sigh of relief. After all, last year’s The Good Dinosaur was the first film to come out of the venerable animation studio that could be considered a legitimate box office disappointment, especially since it came in the wake of the massively successful Inside Out. The massive opening weekend for the sequel to Finding Nemo repositions Pixar in its rightful place on the top of the animated movie food chain.
