What IS Slow Drag?
Ever wondered what how to dance to the slower tunes? Ever gotten lost when the jam gets down and little groovier? Ever wonder how swing dancers used to dance to the slow jams? Look no further. Slow drag is a dance that originated in the ragtime era (late-1890’s/early-1910’s) in the African American communities of yesteryear, and many of the most famous ragtime artists wrote special tunes for this dance. As the years rolled on, slow drag was danced in mid-class joints around the south. Classified as a “less-classy” dance and naturally a large part of the early Black culture, it unfortunately never reached the popularity of the likes of other Black dances such as the Charleston, Lindy Hop, etc., although it was performed on Broadway in 1929.
But today we are lucky, as this foundational dance and piece of history has seen a recent revival in the swing dance community. And Montanans are even luckier – as Slow Drag as found its way to Bozeman!
