Bozeman Police and MSU Police Conduct Joint Alcohol Compliance Checks

On Saturday, December 14, 2013, the Bozeman Police Department partnered with the Montana State University Police Department to conduct alcohol compliance checks at 21 area businesses.  In each check, a 20 year old underage female without any identification entered the business and ordered an alcoholic beverage.

Seventeen of the businesses were in full compliance and refused to sell her a drink when she was unable to provide identification.

Employees from four of the businesses sold the underage person alcohol, either without asking for identification or not verifying legal age.  In these instances, the clerk/server were issued citations for Unlawful Sale of Alcohol to a Minor.  Employees from the following businesses were issued related citations:

  • Plonk, 29 E. Main St.
  • American Legion, 225 E. Main St.
  • Fin, 211 E. Main St.
  • Bar IX, 311 E. Main St.

A large majority of the businesses checked were in full compliance with the laws regarding underage drinking.  They did not allow the teenager to purchase alcohol, refusing service when she was unable to provide proof of legal age.  We applaud the continued good work of these licensed establishments.  Those found in compliance were:

  • Town Pump East, 803 E. Main St.
  • Exxon East Main, 1211 E. Main St.
  • Pour House, 15 N. Rouse Ave.
  • Zebra Bar, 321 E. Main St.
  • 317 Bar, 321 E. Main St.
  • Conoco, 621 W. Main St.
  • Molly Brown Bar, 703 W. Babcock St.
  • Scoop Bar, 712 W. Main St.
  • Bow River Burgers, 1625 W. Main St.
  • Hide a Way Liquor Store, 1625 W. Main St.
  • Bacchus Pub, 105 W. Main St.
  • Teds Montana Grill, 105 W. Main St.
  • Cannery Bar, 43 W. Main St.
  • Copper Whiskey Bar and Grill, 101 W. Main
  • Crystal Bar, 123 E. Main St.
  • R Bar, 211 E. Main St.

With support from the DUI Task Force, local law enforcement conducts these checks to help remind businesses with alcohol licenses to be responsible.  While this focus is on not serving underage drinkers, it also helps remind business owners to be responsible in other areas, to include not over-serving intoxicated patrons and helping to prevent intoxicated persons from driving home.   In this time of holiday cheer, it’s important that all of us do our part to celebrate responsibly.

Particular credit is given to Bozeman Officers Bachich and Lusby and MSU Officer Doner for their role in this enforcement effort.  We also thank our un-named 20 year old female whose assistance is very much appreciated.
