Pete Hanson’s Daily Blog: Goal

I had lunch with a friend yesterday who recently asked her kids what their goals were. Her 12-year old son said, “What are you talking about?” Her 15-year old daughter responded, “Mom, you’re always putting so much pressure on me,” and stormed out of the room. She laughed and asked if that made her a bad parent.

I have friend on the other end of the spectrum who checked in on his 9-year old son one night at 10pm (long after bed time) to make sure all was well. There was a dim light on under the blankets. When he asked what his son was doing, the 9-year old replied, “I’m working on my goals dad.” We laughed and he asked if that made him a bad parent.

Kids are kids, but how many adults have goals? Most of us are probably thinking “I do,” but could you list off ten right now? Do you have them written down somewhere? Do you refer to them on a regular basis? It doesn’t make one bit of difference what they are, but it’s good to have a healthy list of things you want to accomplish. Career, family, fun, individual, spiritual…doesn’t matter. Just good things to think about, to be self-aware about.

I read a quote the other day that said, “Three percent of American adults have goals, the other 97% work for them.” Hi ho, hi ho…
