Pete Hanson’s Daily Blog: God For MVP

On Saturday the New York Jets were down with only a minute and a half left after the Colts, playing at home, just scored to go up by two. In ninety seconds the Jets’ season would be over. However, New York marched down the field and kicked a field goal with no time left on the clock. Final score, J-E-T-S 17, Indy 16. And NY coach Rex Ryan finally had his elusive win over quarterback Peyton Manning.

I forget who it was, but in the postgame press conference one of the New York Jets players was asked why he thought things had turned out the way they did. His response, “I just thank God for helping us advance today. He has been with us every step of the way.”

What?

First of all, I doubt God had “Jets or Colts?” on his to-do list Saturday. Rumor has it he was too busy trying to help us figure out how to stop killing each other in random, senseless mass shootings at political gatherings in front of grocery stores.

And even if he did have time for the game, do we really think he’d take sides? Does God really hate Indiana that much?

Athletes and fans do this all the time, and we’re very serious about it. Fans on the floor praying their team makes the last second overtime field goal. Players in the locker room before the game praying for God to help them get the important win.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say, God doesn’t care who wins. Stop asking him to help your team. He doesn’t like the Heat more than the Cavaliers, the Yankees more than the Red Sox (ok, maybe that’s a bad example), Tiger Woods more than Phil Mickelson. And even if he would nudge the puck over the line if you prayed real hard, is that how you really want to be using your prayer energy? I’m just sayin’…

And I would like to say one more thing. God, if you’re reading this, and I have it all wrong; please have Brett Favre come back and play one more Pro Bowl year with the Vikings. And I would really, really love for them to win the Super Bowl. Amen.
