The Gallatin Canyon guardrail work is causing frustration with many people who have been caught in the backup. Some people on social media have reported delays of over two hours when trying to drive from Bozeman to Big Sky.

The 11.2-mile project is on US Highway 191 within the Gallatin Canyon area. The project begins near the turnoff to Moose Creek Campground and ends near the Hellroaring Trailhead. Peak construction time is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Montana Department of Transportation posted on their Facebook Page that they are aware that anticipated wait times of 15 minutes have been exceeded and they are working on a solution. In a recent notification, MDT stated that they have adjusted signal timing to allow for more traffic flow and shorter delays. Read below what MDT posted about the delays late last week:

Construction delays for the Gallatin Guardrail project on Highway 191 have exceeded anticipated wait times of 15 minutes. Currently, delays are up to one hour in peak travel. Traffic delays have been reported to begin at the Lava Lake Trailhead, and extend through the construction zone near Moose Creek Flat Campground.

The project has slowed travelers down and the Montana Department of Transportation apologizes for the negative impacts on your commutes, recreation and other travel through the area. We are working with our contractor and personnel on-site to develop a plan to reduce these wait times.

District leaders are fully engaged and currently working on a solution. The Montana Department of Transportation is committed to safe and efficient traffic control and is immediately working on improving this situation.
