The Gallatin County Commissioners have decided to submit another Open Space Bond to voters on the June primary ballot.

It might have a better chance of passing then than placing it on the November ballot where it might have to compete with the guest that wouldn’t leave — yet another run at a new Law & Justice Center.

I think we’re at our limit on pizza and latte additions to our property taxes.

How Much Open Space Do We Really Need?

In my opinion we live in The Last Best Place on Earth.

Beautiful mountains, rich farmland, and arguably some of the best fishing, hunting and skiing anywhere on earth abound in the Gallatin Valley.

What’s not to like?

But how much of it should be vacant land? Or, protected land? I’m pretty sure that all of New York City looked like Central Park at one time.

Is there a movement I’m not aware of to tear down all the buildings in New York to have more open space?

I bet there are some areas in New York where that idea would get some traction.

We’re Not In Kansas Anymore

We are trapped in this nice pristine valley. Most of us would be happy if it stayed just the way it is.

It’s not like Kansas where it’s flat for 500 miles. Build over there. We have views to protect. You have cornfields.

We can’t move the mountains back a little to make more farmland. What you see is what you get.

Some Final Thoughts

My capitalistic side says build, build, and build. But my quality of life side says slow down — way down.

I guess it’s a good thing that the valley’s voters will have the final say in June.

Will it be farmland or condos? You have a say in just how far you will be able to see.

Open space or a closed mountain community — you make the call.
