Snow mold is a fungus and common for Montana lawns. It generally kills only the leaf of the plant. It forms under the snow usually when the ground is unfrozen.

It does not occur every year though. Snow mold is UV sensitive so once the sun hits it, it's dead. Mow your lawn short in the fall to help reduce it throughout the winter and into the spring. It is not necessary to use fungicide on the snow mold as the sun takes care of it.
