Pete Hanson’s Daily Blog: Just Do It (Well)

We’re busy people, living in a busy world. Jobs, families, hobbies, clubs, civic organizations, second jobs, third jobs, kids’ activities, committees. It never seems to end. So much to do. So little time. Around my office, you could apply the same template to most people’s daily work to-do lists.

More often than not, they show up to the office with a list of things to get done, and at the end of the day the list is longer than when they got there. We’re all doing more with less, and it’s nearly impossible to get to it all.

Here’s the problem: When it comes to getting things done, “No detail is unimportant. No job is too small.” That doesn’t mean that we’ll have time to get to everything, but it also doesn’t change the fact that, “No detail is unimportant. No job is too small.” It all matters.

My grandfather used to tell us, “Anything worth doing, is worth doing well.” I think he was on to something.

Picture a person you know that frequently achieves at a high level. I’ll bet that they are someone who consistently spends a little extra time…putting in a little extra effort. They are the one that stays fifteen or twenty minutes late to put the finishing touch on a project; after the rest of the office bolted for the door at 4:59. I’m certainly not suggesting we stay chained to our desks until 9pm every night. All it takes is a little something extra, every time. That’s what adds up.

“No detail is unimportant. No job is too small.” Prioritize. Execute like it matters. Finish strong. Be proud. (And don’t forget to cross it off your list.)
