Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born to Die’ Tops iTunes Chart
Lana Del Rey has been under a microscope since last year, but despite negative reviews from naysayers, the deluxe version of the singer’s new album ‘Born to Die’ debuted at No. 1 on iTunes’ albums chart.
Del Rey’s first LP has also topped the charts outside of America, an achievement she credits to her fans. “Thank you for making the record #1 in 11 countries,” so she wrote on her Twitter. “Your sweet words have softened the effect of even the harshest reviews. I adore you.”
The 25 year old appeared on the Jan. 14 episode of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ offering two questionable performances that have been the talk of the music community ever since. However, the New York native isn’t letting the backlash affect her.
“There’s backlash about everything I do. It’s nothing new,” she told Rolling Stone. “When I walk outside, people have something to say about it. It wouldn’t have mattered if I was absolutely excellent. People don’t have anything nice to say about this project…” (For the record, PopCrush gave the album four stars.)
Now, perched atop the iTunes charts, Del Rey is having the last laugh. The first-week sales numbers for ‘Born to Die’ will arrive next week when Nielsen Soundscan releases its reports. Will the singer top the Billboard chart, as well? We’ll just have to wait and see.
