Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom was denied bail on Wednesday (Jan. 25) in New Zealand.  The judge in his case deemed Dotcom a flight risk, ordering the mogul to be imprisoned for another month while he awaits possible extradition to the U.S.

PC Magazine reports that Dotcom will remain in custody until Feb. 22. Dotcom’s lawyers are said to be appealing the decision and fighting the extradition, claiming that Dotcom’s funds were seized and that he won’t leave New Zealand.

Judge David McNaughton, however, wasn’t taking any chances. “With sufficient determination and financial resources, flight risk remains a real and significant possibility which I cannot discount and bail is declined,” McNaughton said. McNaughton also pointed out that is Dotcom fled to Germany, he would be safe from extradition to the U.S.

Dotcom was arrested on charges of racketeering, money laundering and copyright infringement on Jan. 19. Police found Dotcom, real name Kim Schmitz, hiding in a safe room of his $30 million mansion with a loaded shotgun. The Department of Justice pulled Megaupload’s site (causing users to lose their data) and arrested three other Megaupload stakeholders in addition to Dotcom, as well as seizing the property from the company’s New Zealand headquarters.

With all the legal drama surrounding the site, we’re guessing rapper-producer Swizz Beatz is glad he never officially became the company’s CEO.
