Now that a guilty verdict has been handed down in the case of Dr. Conrad Murray, who was accused of involuntary manslaughter regarding his patient Michael Jackson, the doctor has been remanded to custody and was promptly placed on suicide watch in the L.A. County Jail while he awaits sentencing. Murray’s sentencing is slated for Nov. 29.

According to the LA Times, a confidential source in the law enforcement field admitted that the doctor was placed on suicide watch. The source spoke on a condition of anonymity.

Murray, a cardiologist with a practice in Houston, was convicted Monday (Nov. 7) of involuntary manslaughter. The jury believed he acted with criminal negligence and contributed to the death of Jackson in June of 2009. Jackson was under Murray’s care at the time of his death and the biggest criticisms against Murray were how he handled — make that “mishandled”– a dying Jackson and even administered him with propofol, an anesthetic that is dangerous and deadly when used outside of surgical settings. Murray gave the drug to Jackson as a sleep aid. Jackson died of a fatal overdose of the drug, but Murray’s defense team tried to argue that it was the King of Pop himself who administered the final, fatal dose, not Murray.

“This is a crime where the end result was the death of a human being. That factor demands rather dramatically that the public should be protected,” L.A. County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said about the case.

Murray faces up to four years in jail and loss of his medical license. He was stoic when the verdict was read yesterday afternoon.
