Millie Fire Now 40% Contained

Although Bozeman is  again dealing with smokey skies today, firefighters continue to make progress on our fires.  After the weekend they are proud to report the Millie Fire is 40% Contained!

According to the Press Release sent out by the Sheriff's office -

Firefighters continue strengthening existing containment lines and working to eliminate heat sources in the Big Bear and Cottonwood areas to the north and along the southern flank of the fire as Red Flag fire weather continues today. Firefighters anticipate increasing winds throughout the day between 25-35 miles per hour with gusts up to 40 miles per hour tonight as a cold front moves into the area.

Although thunderstorms and showers sprinkled the Bozeman area last night, no appreciable amount of rain was measured on the fire itself.

Since the fire is still active, with potential to spread, the Millie Fire Area Closure is still in effect. The closure will remain in place until it is safe for the public to re-enter the area. The Sourdough Canyon Trail near Bozeman Creek is open to the public on the north side of the fire. Additional nearby recreational areas to visit include; Bang Tail Trail, Chess Nut Mountain, Bear Canyon, Bridger Mountains, Crazy Mountains, and the Absaroka-Beartooth.

A Burned Area Emergency Response Team has been activated and will begin developing a plan to alleviate the negative effects of the fire on the land even as the firefighting effort continues.
