It’s been well-known for quite a while that Natalie Portman isn’t appearing in Thor: Ragnarok, which takes place largely on Asgard and throughout its other spacey realms, with very few scenes set on Earth. If you were hoping that Jane Foster might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe sometime soon, however, then you might want to take this news whilst sitting down.

Portman recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal to promote her directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness (for which she also serves as screenwriter and star), and the chat eventually turned to the subject of Marvel. When asked if she might reprise her role as Jane Foster in a future superhero film, she said:

I don’t know if, maybe, one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever. I have no idea! But as far as I know I’m done.

Portman certainly seems open to the idea of returning despite previous reports that she didn’t particularly enjoy appearing in Marvel movies. Back when the studio replaced director Patty Jenkins on Thor: The Dark World, rumors began circulating that Portman was pretty unhappy with the decision and only appeared in the film to fulfill her contractual obligation.

Although she’s putting an optimistic spin on things, you probably shouldn’t count on Portman returning to the MCU anytime soon — if ever.
