One Direction Win Best Pop Video at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards

And so it begins!

The 2012 Video Music Awards started off with quite a bang, thanks to host and comedian Kevin Hart, who by the way, left no celebrity unscathed during his opening monologue. After the stage diving into the crowd, he announced the arrival of Katy Perry to give out the first onstage award of the evening for Best Pop Video.

Can we just take a second to guffaw over how amazing she looked?! In a long black gown, adorned with pink and blue appliques and her long brown locks wavy and cast over one shoulder, Perry looked the best she has in a long time. Perhaps she has new beau John Mayer to thank for her new look?

Our psychic abilities allowed us to predict the winner, and we were spot on! One Direction won the award for Best Pop Video and boy did the boys from the U.K. look as genuinely shocked as ever!... and so did the audience. Taylor Swift looked so-so about the band winning, but managed to sing along as 1D's 'What Makes You Beautiful' played in the background, and the guys from fun. looked... disappointed in the choice for winner.

But in an interesting gesture, and to spice things up a bit, Perry kissed each of the boys (see her smooching Niall below) on the lips when they arrived on stage to collect their award. Sorry, girls everywhere! It's probably why 1D managed to break the flag from the moonman almost immediately upon receiving the award.
