It's official: The UK is leaving the European Union.

For those less versed in British politics, yesterday (June 23), 51.9% of the population of the United Kingdom voted to leave the EU in a record turnout of over 30 million voters — dubbed "Brexit."

According to the BBC, the Independence Party — which led the campaign — charged that the EU "imposed too many rules on business and charged billions of pounds a year in membership fees for little in return" and that Britain needed to "take back full control of its borders and reduce the number of people coming here to live and/or work."

The effects of this decision are already being felt immensely: Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that he'll be stepping down by the fall, and the British pound has already dropped in value by nearly 10%. It is now "highly likely" that Scotland, which voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU, will now vote on independence from the rest of Britain, according to Reuters.

As the public continues to absorb this shocking new development in global politics, celebrities — especially those who live in the UK — continue to share their thoughts around the world.

"Who can say what will happen in the future, but today feels like a loss for unity and tolerance. i don't want to say goodbye to my friends," Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander lamented on Twitter.

"It's a sad day. The economic impact that this is going to have is definitely going to make those voters regret their decision," One Direction's Niall wrote.

"Well millennials. We're really really f--ked," concluded Lily Allen.
