After making his (seriously underrated) English-language debut with Stoker, South Korean director Park Chan-wook is back with The Handmaiden, a new thriller based on Sarah Waters’ acclaimed British novel Fingersmith. And judging by this stunning and enigmatic new trailer, Chan-wook’s latest is every bit as sinister, seductive and visually sublime as his previous efforts.

Prior to his elegantly deranged coming-of-age horror drama Stoker, Chan-wook was best known for South Korean thrillers like Oldboy and Lady Vengance. The director returns home for The Handmaiden, which left quite the impression on critics when it premiered at Cannes back in May, and if this trailer is any indication, then all the intriguing talk of sex and depravity and revenge and sensual camerawork and scissors (yeah, seriously, I can’t wait) may have just been the tip of the iceberg.

And whoever edited that trailer certainly deserves a raise because it is remarkable. If you need me, I’ll just be over here on the edge of my seat, waiting for The Handmaiden to hit theaters in October. Meanwhile, here’s the official synopsis for Chan-wook‘s latest thriller:

From PARK Chan-wook, the celebrated director of OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE, THIRST and STOKER, comes a ravishing new crime drama inspired by the novel ‘FINGERSMITH’ by British author Sarah Waters. Having transposed the story to 1930s-era colonial Korea and Japan, Park presents a gripping and sensual tale of a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but who is secretly involved in a conman’s plot to defraud her of her large inheritance. Powered by remarkable performances from KIM Min-hee (RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN) as Lady Hideko, HA Jung-woo (THE CHASER) as the conman who calls himself the Count and sensational debut actress KIM Tae-ri as the maid Sookee, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with PARK Chan-wook’s singular vision and energy to create an unforgettable viewing experience.

The Handmaiden will be released by Amazon Studios, which continues to make very smart, discerning decisions when it comes to acquiring original films — they also have Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and recently released Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon.

As for Chan-wook’s film, it hits theaters on October 14 before debuting exclusively on Amazon a few months later.
