How do you celebrate the Halloween season? Do you watch horror films, decorate the house, bake treats, go ghost hunting, read scary stories? Flavorwire.com has compiled a list of 50 books they consider to be the scariest. Will you dare read any of them?

The list covers many genres including horror, science fiction, thriller, and drama. Each author was only allowed on the list once.

The first five books are:

  1. It by Stephen King
  2. Piercing by Ryu Murakami
  3. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
  4. Ghost Story by Peter Straub
  5. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

Of course, not everyone will agree with the list. Many were quick to offer their own favorites which include:

  • The Moonlit Road by Ambrose Bierce
  • Pet Sematary by Stephen King
  • Threshold by Caitlin R. Kiernan
  • Songs of a Dead Dreamer by Thomas Ligotti
  • Rant: The Oral Biography of Buster Casey by Chuck Palahniuk
