When June arrives in Montana, it feels like summer has officially begun.

The Longest Day: Summer Solstice in Montana

The summer solstice typically falls on June 20 or June 21, giving us the longest day and the most daylight of the year. After that, the days slowly begin getting shorter as we start the countdown toward fall.

Montana's Unique Weather: Warmth and Snow

June, July, and August are usually Montana's warmest months, so it's no surprise that temperatures begin climbing as we head deeper into summer. While June can bring some beautiful warm weather, Montana is also a place where winter never completely disappears. In fact, snow has been recorded somewhere in the state during every month of the year, including June. Of course, those late-season snowfalls are usually limited to the higher elevations.

So just how hot can June get in Montana?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has tracked statewide temperatures dating back to 1895, and some June months have been significantly warmer than others. According to NOAA data, the hottest June on record in Montana occurred in 1988.

These rankings are based on average statewide temperatures recorded across Montana.

Notably, some of Montana's hottest Junes have occurred in recent decades. The June of 2021 ranks as the second warmest in state history, while 2015 also made the top 10.

Whether this June ends up joining that list remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Montana is entering its warmest stretch of the year, and before long, many Montanans may be looking for ways to cool off.
