Early this morning on March 3, a total lunar eclipse lit up the sky. If you were up around 2:20 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Mountain Time, you had the chance to see the moon shift into that deep red glow people call a blood moon. The peak moment happened right around 4:33 a.m., when the color was at its most dramatic.

What Is A Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse takes place when Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon. Our planet blocks most of the sunlight, casting a large shadow across the moon's surface. The only light that reaches the moon passes through Earth’s atmosphere first, which filters it and gives it that reddish orange tone. It is like every sunrise and sunset on Earth being reflected back onto the moon at once.

When Is The Next Blood Moon?

If you missed it, you are going to be waiting a while. This was the last total lunar eclipse visible from Earth until the end of 2028. The next one Montanans will be able to see will not happen until June 26, 2029.
