If you live in Butte-Silver Bow, specifically south of Front Street, you’re going to want to put the tap water on pause for now.

On Wednesday afternoon, August 13th, officials issued an urgent notice advising residents not to drink city water, make ice, brush teeth, wash dishes, prepare food or baby formula, or even shower with it until further notice.

"Due to an over pressurization event at Montana Resources, contaminants were flushed into the potable water system in Butte-Silver Bow. Residents south of Front Street are ordered not to consume the tap water until the Water Division is able to test and clear the contamination. Public Works Director Mark Neary (mneary@bsb.mt.gov) states that they are working diligently to fix the situation and will update the community as soon as possible." - City-County of Butte-Silver Bow

The incident, reported around 4 p.m., is not believed to be connected to the sewer system, but officials aren’t taking any chances.

Testing is underway, and results could take up to 24 hours. In the meantime, the county is stepping in to help. Starting Thursday morning, August 14th, bottled water will be distributed at the Civic Center and Montana Resources Administrative Office at 600 Shields Ave., right across from McGruff Park.

While this is a frustrating situation, especially during the summer heat, it’s important for residents to follow the advisory to stay safe. Officials are also reminding people not to call 911 unless there’s an actual emergency. For water-related questions, you can call 406-497-6440.

Bottom line: hold off on the tap, grab some bottled water, and keep an eye on official updates. Hopefully, this will be just a short-lived disruption in Butte’s daily routine.
