Montana is home to multiple waterways.

Here in Big Sky Country, we have more than 3000 named lakes and thousands of rivers and creeks across the state. Many of those are used for recreation, like floating, rafting, fishing, boating, and swimming.

Of course, the most famous in the state is Flathead Lakeknown as the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. However, it's not just Flathead Lake that is impressive. Montana is home to several other popular lakes, such as Lake McDonald, Earthquake Lake, Seeley Lake, and Canyon Fairy, to name a few.

Fort Peck Lake is ranked as the 5th biggest reservoir in the nation. The only ones bigger are Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota, Lake Oahe in South Dakota, Lake Powell in Utah, and Lake Mead in both Arizona and Nevada.

Construction on Fort Peck Lake started back in the 1930s as part of the New Deal. At its deepest, the lake goes down 220 feet, and it was a multi-year project that took right around 15 years from start to finish. The lake is popular for recreation, and has almost 30 different recreational sites along its shores.
