Confession time, I wasn't born or raised in Montana.

Now, I know for some of you that will automatically make me "one of those", but I've lived here for years and there's no other place I would rather be. Some people are meant for the east or west coasts, some long for the heartland, and for me, it's always been the mountains.

However, it seems that many folks living in Montana are thinking about packing up and heading out of Big Sky Country.  Maybe it's the cost of living, the harsh winters, or the number of transplants that continue to move here.  Or maybe, they're just looking for something new.

Where Do Montanans Want To Relocate To?

This is where it gets a bit interesting, according to the data, Montanans have been researching several different spots for relocation including a few that are outside of the United States.

According to Remilty, there are the Top 10 Destinations Montanans Are Looking To Move To.  First, let's start with the 5 destinations outside of Montana, but still in the U.S.

  • Portland, Oregon
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Washington, DC
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • San Diego, California

I'll be honest, I was a little shocked by this, especially considering that both Washington DC and Chicago are known for their high crime rates. Through in the fact that Portland has all kinds of issues with drugs plus a large homeless population, and the results are surprising.

So what about outside of the United States? According to the data, Montanans are looking at these 5 locations for a potential move.

  • Dubai, UAE
  • Singapore
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Paris, France
  • Calgary, Alberta

I spent about an hour in Amsterdam catching a flight, and while I can't tell you much about the city, the airport was nice. I did live in Calgary for a couple of years a couple of decades ago and enjoyed it, however, the population has grown at a very rapid pace, and during my last visit, I didn't know where I was half the time.

The one thing all of these places have in common is a much larger population than the entire state of Montana, which to me doesn't seem like a positive. What do you think?  If you were to move away from Montana where would you want to go?
