Montana’s Most Iconic Restaurant That’s No Longer Around
Montana is full of history.
From epic battlefields to historic towns, when you look back on all that has happened here in Big Sky Country, it is rather impressive. One of the most historic towns in Montana is Butte, Montana.
Butte is known for several different things. From its historic and haunted buildings to the Berkeley Pit and, of course, the oldest operating Chinese Restaurant in the country. However, that's not all that Butte is known for. The town is also known for being the home of the most iconic restaurant in Montana, which is no longer in business.

What is Montana's most iconic restaurant that's no longer around?
Foods Insight went through each of the 50 states to determine which restaurant no longer around is the most iconic. When it came to Montana, it was the legendary Matt's Place which closed a few years ago.
Matt's was in business for 9 decades and closed during the pandemic in 2021. Matt's was known for being Montana's oldest drive-in and was famous for it's milkshakes and of course, the infamous nut burger.
Matt's was the type of place that was beloved by locals and visitors. It was a place where generations of folks would go and take their kids and grandkids to enjoy what they enjoyed when they were their age. It was the perfect combonation of nostolgia and good food all wrapped up in a unique diner/drive in package.
The building is on the National Historic List and still stands. The last time I drove by, it was for sale. It's a haunting reminder of better days gone by and one can only hope that it sees a rebirth before it's too late, but that might be wishful thinking.
