How To Be “Bear Aware” In Bozeman

As we get ready to say so long to Summer and hello to Fall, it's an important reminder that we should all be "Bear Aware" here in Montana.

Montana is home to both the Grizzly and the Black Bear and as the temps drop, bears are looking for food as they prepare for winter and it just so happens that September is a peak month for bears in our area. So much so that the City of Bozeman released a statement. Here's what they had to say:

As the days grow shorter, bears become more active in Gallatin Valley. Help us keep these animals wild by keeping your garbage safe! Secure your trash by storing it in your garage or behind a locked gate until 7 a.m. on your trash collection day

They also mention that if you are looking for a bear resistant garbage bin, you can reach out to them and they will be able to assist you.

How many bears call Montana home?

So, just how many bears are there here in Montana? There are up to 2000 Grizzlies and up to 17,000 Black Bears. Of course, one is a little more aggressive than the other and while Grizzlies might not walk the streets in town, Black Bears certainly do.

For those who are curious about being "Bear Aware" in town, check out the following tips:

• Secure all trash indoors overnight
• Make sure that pet food is not left outside (this includes bird feed)
• Make sure that you clean your Barbeque Grill after each use
• Make sure you lock your vehicles and homes during the evening
