The NFL Draft has come and gone, and before that, there was a lot of talk on whether Montana State University's starting Quarterback Tommy Mellott would be drafted or sign an unrestricted free agent deal.

In the end, the experts were wrong.

It was thought that IF Mellott were drafted, he would go in the 7th round. However, Mellot was selected in the 6th Round and was the 213th overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders.

While that is huge news for Montana State Fans and the entire town of Butte, the question that many Montanans have is what position will the All-American play?

According to multiple sources, Mellott will be a Wide Receiver/Special Teams player, which makes sense because, from an athletic standpoint, he's numbers are beyond impressive. Mellott ran a 4.39 40-yard dash and had a 41-inch vertical jump.

According to one ESPN reporter, it was thought by many NFL executives that Mellott was "the draft's best-kept secret".

What's next for Tommy Mellott?

There will be mini-camps and training camps. There will be film study and workouts, and all of the things that come with playing at the next level. Oh, and add to that the fact that your new Head Coach (Pete Carroll) will one day be in the NFL Hall of Fame, as will one of your owners (Tom Brady), who just happens to be considered the greatest NFL Quarterback of all time.

While all of that is exciting, let's not forget that this is a kid who was raised in the town of Butte. He is hardworking, down-to-earth, comes from a great family, and has been an excellent student all through college. He is what a role model should be.

Oh, and an interesting side note. The Raiders used their next pick to draft NDSU's QB Cam Miller, who was runner-up to Mellott in the Walter Camp Award and just happened to be the "other QB" in that battle for the National Championship game this past January down in Frisco, Texas.

So, while Mellott's time is done at Montana State, the adventure is certainly not over. While many Montanans will run out to buy Raiders gear, if I've learned anything watching him play the last 4 years, I would be willing to bet the best is still to come from Tommy Mellott.
