If you are reading this, you probably live in Montana. Maybe you were born and raised here, or maybe you are a transplant like me. And if you are a transplant, chances are you have become the friend everyone wants to visit. Living in Big Sky Country comes with bragging rights, but it also comes with a little responsibility.
When family or friends fly in, it is your job to give them a quick Montana survival guide. Here are three reminders worth sharing.

1.) Pack For Every Season
I always have to coach my family on what to bring. They come from the deep South where summer heat lingers long after sunset. Montana does not work that way. Yes, afternoons can be warm, but evenings cool off fast. I have seen snowflakes in July. Tell your guests to throw in a jacket and an extra layer even if the forecast looks hot and sunny.

2.) Maybe Skip The Yellowstone Wardrobe
Not the national park. The television series. Yellowstone brought a lot of attention to this state. While many enjoyed the show, locals are not exactly thrilled with the surge of growth that followed. Matching ranch themed outfits downtown might get a few side glances. Scratch that... will get the side eye.

3.) Respect The Land And The Wildlife
Leaving trash behind is obvious, but even food scraps matter. An apple core tossed at a campsite can attract animals. In bear country, including areas with grizzlies, food and garbage need to be stored properly. Don’t leave tons of food in a vehicle, put stuff in bear-resistant containers, or suspended high off the ground.
