Montana’s Most Scenic Fall Road Trip Starts Near Bozeman
For a front-row seat to nature’s show, set out on Highway 191 through Gallatin Canyon. This winding route hugs the Gallatin River, offering endless opportunities to soak in vibrant fall colors. Towering aspens glow bright yellow, shrubs burst into fiery reds and oranges, and crisp mountain air fills every turn.

Wildlife sightings are common on this stretch of road. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, and even the occasional black bear. The drive is as much about slowing down as it is about the destination.
Want to make a day of it? Continue south toward Hebgen Lake, then loop back through Ennis via Highway 287. The sweeping Madison Valley offers panoramic mountain views and frequent glimpses of massive elk herds.
Stop in Ennis for a cozy lunch at one of its local restaurants before making your way back to Bozeman.
From Norris, you can follow Highway 84 back through the scenic Madison River Canyon or head to Three Forks and jump on I-90. No matter which way you go, this simple day trip will remind you why Montana’s brief autumn is so unforgettable.
