Snow Shortage Forces NCAA Ski Championships Out of Bozeman
What should have been a banner moment for Bozeman’s winter sports scene has instead become a headline about retreat.
The 2026 National Collegiate Skiing Championships, originally scheduled to be hosted by Montana State at Bridger Bowl from March 11–14, have been officially relocated to Utah due to insufficient snowfall and challenging conditions this season.
The Alpine events will now be held at the Utah Olympic Park’s Spencer F. Eccles Center in Park City, while the Nordic races will take place at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway, Utah. The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Committee made the difficult decision to relocate the championships.

While the national championship dates haven’t changed, the move delivers a significant blow to the local economy, outdoor culture, and Bozeman’s reputation as a top destination for winter sports.
The official reason for relocating the event isn’t a lack of effort. Organizers in Bozeman worked hard to prepare Bridger Bowl and the Crosscut Mountain Sports Center as host venues, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate.
For Bozeman, a community deeply connected to outdoor recreation, the news is disheartening to say the least. Losing the 2026 NCAA Ski Championships to Utah is more than a scheduling change; it’s a reminder that weather variability affects our economy, our reputation as a premier winter destination, and the way we plan for the future.
Honestly, it's a huge bummer for Bozeman and Bridger Bowl. The lack of snow is having devastating impacts on businesses in the state that rely on winter recreation and visitation to survive.
