Spending time with family and friends is the most important part of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, but the food can't be overlooked.

I moved to Montana to work in radio, and while I love living in Big Sky Country, I miss Idaho quite often. Last year, I spent Thanksgiving alone for the first time in my life, and it was rough. It helped me understand how many people feel during the holidays when they have no place to go.

The Thanksgiving Side Dish Every Montana Family Will Love

When I do get to be in Idaho for Thanksgiving with my family, there's one thing I look forward to every year at the dinner table. I'm not sure of its official name, but it's a fruit salad that is out of this world. It's literally the best thing ever.

It's a bit on the sweet side and contains sugar, so if you're on a diet, you may want to avoid it. I feel like Thanksgiving should always count as a cheat day.

I called my mom and asked her about it, and apparently, it's not a top-secret family recipe. So, I decided to share it with you so that you and your family can enjoy it.

First, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • Small container of sour cream.
  • 12 oz. bottle of maraschino cherries.
  • Small can of mandarin oranges
  • Small can of crushed pineapple
  • Half a cup of sweetened coconut
  • A cup of small marshmallows (not the miniature hot cocoa kind)

Make sure to drain the liquid out of all of the cans before mixing the ingredients together. Get a mixing bowl, and combine all of the ingredients thoroughly. Cover the bowl and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours.

If you decide to make it, I'd love to hear how it turned out and whether or not it was a hit at your dinner table.
