Weather conditions in Montana can change rapidly. It can go from sunny and calm to snowing sideways in a matter of minutes. Montana’s weather is famously unpredictable, and sometimes downright wild.

Over the past several years, Montana has seen an influx of new residents. Many newcomers come from states with milder, more predictable weather, and they’re often caught off guard by just how extreme Montana conditions can be.

Montana holds some incredible weather records. The lowest temperature in the lower 48 states, -70°F, was recorded at Rogers Pass near Helena in 1954. Tornadoes are rare but memorable, like the 2010 twister that tore through Billings, damaging the former Rimrock Auto Arena, now First Interstate Arena at MetraPark.

Hailstorms can also cause extensive damage. In 2019, Billings saw hail the size of baseballs, knocking down trees, destroying crops, and denting cars.

Bozeman isn’t immune either. The area has endured its fair share of hailstorms, with golf-ball- and baseball-sized hail damaging roofs and vehicles in recent years.

Montana’s geography plays a big role in its weather. Western Montana’s mountains bring heavy snowfall, while eastern Montana is drier and more desert-like. Don't be fooled, though. It can snow at any time of year.
