This issue has been a hot topic for the past several years in Montana, and we might have answers on what could happen.

One of the best parts of living in Montana is there isn't a sales tax when buying goods. If a product says it's $1, it's $1. You don't have to deal with mental math to figure out what additional sales tax would be added to a bill, and it's a nice feeling to have.

Montana is one of five states that doesn't institute a sales tax. A few places around Montana, like Big Sky, Whitefish, Yellowstone, and Philipsburg, have resort tax for goods, housing, and more, but it's a small tax of around 2%.

Every state around Montana has a sales tax, but it varies from 5-7%, and some states have a sales tax that is even higher.

Many states use funds from the sales tax to fund infrastructure and programs around their state.

Is there a chance Montana will institute a sales tax? We might have an answer.

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte had a meeting to discuss the current property tax issues and whether a sales tax could help alleviate the problem. NBC Montana reports that the governor believes they can find ways to lower property taxes without instituting a sales tax.

Montana has some of the highest property taxes in America, and a sales tax could lower those fees for many locals, but the governor wants to cover all of his bases before concluding.

It's a place to start, but we think this has been coming for a long time. Since 2020, Montana has been seeing hundreds of billions of dollars roll into the state for tourism, and adding a sales tax could be beneficial.
