Montanans could be in for a rare and breathtaking treat this week. A strong geomagnetic storm is expected to bring the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, into view across parts of Big Sky Country.

A strong geomagnetic storm, triggered by increased solar activity, is forecast to bring the Northern Lights much farther south than usual this week. That means parts of Montana, especially in the central and northern regions, could catch a glimpse of the vibrant green, red, and purple hues dancing across the sky.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, solar activity is ramping up, and the resulting geomagnetic energy may make the aurora visible much farther south than usual.

That means even areas as far south as Bozeman, Billings, and Missoula could get a glimpse of the vibrant green, pink, and purple lights shimmering across the night sky. If you’re hoping to catch the aurora borealis over Montana, Tuesday night, June 25, is shaping up to be your best bet.

Experts suggest that the best time to view the aurora will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., with peak activity expected in the late-night to early morning hours. The strongest displays often occur just after midnight, but even early evening hours can deliver a show if the skies cooperate.

To get the best view of the Northern Lights, head away from city lights. Look for a location with dark skies and a clear view of the northern horizon. Some top viewing spots in Montana include:

  • Glacier National Park (especially the east side)
  • Flathead Lake area
  • Big Sky
  • The Shields and Paradise Valleys
  • Anywhere with low light pollution

Bring a blanket, a warm drink, and a camera. You might just witness one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies, and don't forget to tag us in your pictures.

LOOK: Montana's Most Beautiful Rivers

When you're looking for some of Montana's prettiest rivers, you don't have to look for - but you can certainly get off the beaten path, too.
The largest river in Montana by volume is the Clark Fork, but it's NOT the longest. The Clark Fork is considered the headwaters of the Columbia River Basin.
