Believe it or not there is a certain amount of bug parts that the Food and Drug Administration says is allowable in our food.

Well there are some people who want to add even more bug parts to food — a lot more.

Crickets In Demand As The New Protein

According to an Associated Press Fox News article crickets have moved up the food chain as the newest source of protein.

In 2013 the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations reported on the viability of edible insects to help reduce world hunger.

There are now about 20 companies currently using cricket power in everything from candy bars to chips.

In May of 2016 a US academic conference was held in Detroit to explore uses of insects for food and feed.

A New Industry Is Formed

The North American Edible Insect Coalition has been formed to do research and to educate the public about insects as a possible food source.

People eat all sorts of things around the world. Dog is a delicacy in some cultures. One man’s gourmet meal activates another’s gag reflex.

Some Final Thoughts

While I enjoy food I do draw the line at some common foods. Oysters and squid are strictly off limits to my pallet.

Shrimp and most other fish are OK.

Are crickets, ants, or grasshoppers going to be a staple of your diet in the future?
