New Species of Plant-Eating Dinosaur Unearthed in Montana
Wondering why they refer to Montana as the Treasure State? To be honest, the nickname is due to the state's rich mining history, but you never know what types of treasures are waiting to be discovered. According to the University of Utah, a new giant horned dinosaur has been discovered in the ancient swamps of northern Montana.
The new species is among the largest and most ornate horned dinosaurs ever found. It's called the Lokiceratops rangiformis, and it's named after the Norse god Loki. Experts believe the Lokiceratops roamed the earth around 78 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. The dinosaur was just unveiled at the Natural History Museum of Utah.
The dinosaur was excavated from the badlands of northern Montana just a few miles from the USA-Canada border. It has two gigantic horns above its eyes.
Lokiceratops rangiformis appeared at least 12 million years earlier than its famous cousin Triceratops and was the largest horned dinosaur of its time.
