Star Trek Online’s Leonard Nimoy Memorial Debuts
Cryptic Studios has launched its in-game tribute to the late, great Leonard Nimoy on Vulcan and New Romulus in Star Trek Online.
IGN reports that Cryptic Studios has debuted two in-game memorials paying tribute to Leonard Nimoy. The legendary actor is famous for playing the role of Spock in various Star Trek films and TV shows throughout the past 50 years. Nimoy passed away one week ago at the age of 83 due to complications of end-stage COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The first of these statues appears on Spock's homeworld of Vulcan. Cryptic Studios has decided to place the Spock memorial at the center of a fountain where thousands of players gathered after hearing of Nimoy's passing. The fountain has been changed to have a statue of Spock at its center, posed in the Vulcan salute. The Vulcan blessing of "Live Long and Prosper," which became somewhat of a catchphrase to the character, is inscribed below the statue.
A second memorial to Spock appears on New Romulus. Instead of the Vulcan blessing, this Nimoy memorial is captioned by "The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few," which were part of Spock's last words to Star Trek protagonist Captain Kirk before the character selflessly died saving his crewmen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The New Romulus and Vulcan statues each have a plaque on them that mention the names of previous Star Trek alumni who have died over the years, including Nimoy, DeForest Kelley (Leonard "Bones" McCoy), James Doohan (Montgomery "Scotty" Scott), Majel Barrett (Lwaxana Troi) and Star Trek's creator, Gene Roddenberry.
"People will be able to interact with this memorial and read the names, the dates of their birth and passing, and a personal quote where possible," said Stephen Ricossa, Star Trek Online's Executive Producer. "In this small way, we hope to honor the memory and contribution of those who helped shape Star Trek into the cultural touchstone it is today."
