This Popular Montana Mountain Lake is a Hidden Gem
Want to get off the grid in Montana and escape the crowds? Do you enjoy long drives down remote mountain roads? If so, you need to know about this incredibly beautiful alpine lake. The road may be rough, but it's worth the drive.
Popular Mountain Road in Montana Opens For Summer Season
Due to the long winters in Montana, many roads are inaccessible for much of the year. Montanans patiently wait for summer to arrive to navigate remote mountain roads safely. One of Montana's most popular mountain roads leads to a breathtaking alpine lake nestled within the Bridger Mountain Range outside of Bozeman.
The lake has become somewhat of a social media sensation. On Facebook, people have turned folks asking "Is the road open yet" into a popular drinking game. Of course, we're talking about Fairy Lake.
Fairy Lake is one of Montana's most beautiful mountain lakes, but it's not the easiest place to get to. The road is usually rough and full of ruts, and a high-clearance vehicle with 4-wheel drive is recommended. During the summer, it may be difficult to find a parking spot. With the growing population of the Bozeman area, the crowds have increased. If you want to visit Fairy Lake, make sure to pack water and snacks. Other than a bathroom, there are no amenities in the area.

According to the Custer Gallatin National Forest, Fairy Lake Road is officially open for the summer season.
How to Get to Fairy Lake From Bozeman
From Bozeman, head north on Highway 86 (Bridger Canyon Road) for approximately 21-22 miles. Turn left onto Fairy Lake Road (Forest Road #74). Watch for signs! Look for the Upper Trailhead turnoff. The turnoff will be on the right. For more information about Fairy Lake, click here.
