Tonight (Aug. 25) at the 2013 MTV VMAs, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis received an award for Best Hip-Hop Video, but that’s not all! The dynamic duo also won Best Video With a Social Message for their hit single, ‘Same Love.’

The track appears on their 2012 album ‘The Heist’ and features vocals by singer-songwriter Mary Lambert. The tune strongly advocates same-sex marriage and was inspired by Macklemore’s own sense of frustration with hip-hop’s stance on sexuality – particularly regarding the LGBT community.

“To me, this is the most important record out of all of them,” explained Macklemore after accepting the award. “To watch this song in the last year spread across the world is a testament to what is happening right now in America on the forefront of equality.”

“Gay rights are human rights,” he went on to say. “There is no separation.”

“Thank you so much. Thank you again to all the fans. This means a lot,” added Lewis.

The duo was up against some tough competition, including the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Snoop Lion, Miguel and Beyonce, but we think their win was much-deserved!
