Here’s When Montana’s Most Beautiful Highway Opens in 2025

Montana is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, and a certain highway in the state ranks among the best scenic drives in America.

For many, a Montana vacation is a bucket list item. If you're lucky enough to call the state home, you're lucky enough. During the summer, many places in Montana can become overcrowded due to visitors.

If you want to get off-the-beaten-path and avoid the crowds, there are a lot of great places to visit and things to do in Big Sky Country.

I've been trying to make it to Winifred, Montana to visit the collection of Tonka trucks in the museum for nearly 10 years. Apparently, the museum holds one of the largest Tonka collections in the world. Hopefully, this summer I'll make it up that way.

A few years ago, my friend Cindy and I drove the Beartooth Highway for the first time. I was blown away by how beautiful it was. You literally feel like you're sitting on top of the world. If you're lucky, you might even see a Pika, a small mountain dwelling mammal found at high elevations in North America.

When Will Montana's Most Beautiful Highway Open in 2025?

Crews are working hard to clear snow from the Beartooth Highway in preparation for opening day. Weather permitting, the highway generally opens on the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend and remains open through mid-October, according to the Montana Department of Transportation.

The Beartooth Highway (US 212) is 68.7 miles long, and is located between Cooke City, Montana and Red Lodge, Montana. At its peak, the highway reaches an elevation of 10,947 feet.
