Important Deadline for Montana Drivers: What You Need to Know
There a major change coming that Montana drivers need to know about.
If you are planning on traveling on an airline this year, you'll need to update your state-issued ID before the upcoming deadline. The process is fairly easy, but there are a few things you need to know before you make an appointment.
How To Make A REAL ID Appointment In The State Of Montana
The new Real ID is federally mandated, and will make state-issued driver's licenses more secure. It will be needed to travel via airline, unless you have a passport. One of the two items will also be required to enter any federal building, military base, or nuclear facility.

According to the Montana Motor Vehicle Division, the deadline to get Real ID-compliant license is May 7, 2025.
You are not required to get a Montana REAL ID compliant license or ID; however, a Montana REAL ID compliant license or ID or another acceptable form of identification is required to fly domestically and access federal facilities by May 7, 2025. Alternative options, such as a passport or passport card, are acceptable forms of identification.
Making an appointment to get a Real ID is easy, and takes less than 15 minutes.
Here are the documents that you'll need to get a Real ID in Montana.
