When I first moved to Montana back in the early 2000s my dream was to buy a home with some land out in the middle of nowhere and just enjoy life in the peace and quite of the Montana country side. I didn't because I thought it was too expensive.

The irony? It was only a fraction of what it would cost now.

Back then you could buy a luxury home with a few acres for what a townhouse would cost you nowadays. Yes, the times have certainly changed and it hasn't necessarily been in favor of the consumer.

People are still moving to Montana and for many, they have the same dream as me. To buy a home on a few acres in the country, the problem with that is, unless your wealthy, that's probably not going to happen.

Are there still places to live in Montana for cheap?

Sure, there are places here in Big Sky Country where you can buy property for a good price, the problem is, most people don't want that property. They want the mountain views and those views come at a premium. The demand for property in the western half of Montana is in much higher demand than the eastern part of the state.

Of course, certain towns and cities are more in demand than others.
