There isn't another ski area in Montana that is quite like this place, and it's worth the trip.

Even though a ton of snow hasn't fallen in Montana so far, we know it's on its way. Montana ski areas and resorts have barely opened due to the low snowfall we have seen. When the snow comes, and it will, people will be flocking to the ski areas to enjoy a lovely day of shredding powder.

Montana has all different types of ski areas. There are local ski hills like Showdown and Bridger Bowl and resort-type spots like Big Sky that people enjoy if they have the money or time.

What if you are looking for something unique to check out this winter? Well, you are in luck because there is a ski hill that is one of a kind. It's so rare there are only a handful of them in America.

The Blacktail Mountain Ski Area can be found in the small town of Lakeside. What makes Blacktail so unique? It's one of only five upside-down ski areas in the world.

What does that mean? Instead of parking at a ski mountain base like usual, at Blacktail, you drive up to the top of the mountain, put on your gear, and start skiing immediately. Just check you have your pass ready so you can hit the chairs to get back to the top.

Blacktail Mountain has everything you would want in a local ski hill. There is a fantastic lodge with rentals, a restaurant to grab a bite to eat or drink, and views that go on forever. It's beautiful up there on a good ski day.
