In Montana's most populated cities, cannabis dispensaries are a common sight. It seems like there's a different one on every block. The use of medical cannabis was first legalized in California in 1996. Montana wasn't far behind, legalizing medical use in 2004.

As of August 2023, adult-use recreational cannabis sales in the state had already reached $23,728,009 for the year, according to the Montana Department of Revenue. From January 2022 to date, adult-use sales have totaled $516,237,988.
