Gas prices have been steadily increasing across the country, but Montanans aren't feeling the strain as much as other states.

In Idaho, the average price of regular unleaded has increased by more than 50 cents in the past month. In Montana, the average price of regular unleaded has increased by 27 cents in the past month, from $2.44/gal to $2.71/gal.

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.87/gal. Montana's average of $2.71/gal is well below the national average.

According to gasbuddy.com, there are many gas stations in the Bozeman area where you can fill up your tank for less than $2.70/gal. As always, the cheapest place to get gas in the Bozeman area is Costco, where a gallon of regular unlead will cost you $2.61.

Currently, California has the highest gas prices in the country. The average price for regular unleaded is $3.88/gal, which is more than $1 above the national average.

It's hard to be happy about rising gas prices, but compared to most states in the country, Montanans have it pretty good.

AAA offers great advice on how to improve your gas mileage.

  • Slow down and drive the speed limit. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.
  • Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard acceleration. These actions greatly increase fuel consumption.
  • Avoid extended idling to warm up the engine, even in winter. It’s unnecessary and wastes fuel.
  • When driving in town, adjust your speed to “time” the traffic lights. This reduces repeated braking and acceleration that consume additional fuel.
