Montana State University has won the annual 'Can the Griz' food drive, according to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. The results were announced during Saturday's 'Brawl of the Wild' game at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula.

Montana State University and the Bozeman community not only managed to 'Can the Griz', but the number of donations collected shattered a previous record.

2021 marks the 22nd year of the Can the Griz Food Drive. The food drive is a friendly, off-field competition between Montana State University and the University of Montana to see which school can collect the most donations for their local food bank. The competition began Saturday, November 6.

Can the Griz proceeds go to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank and benefits Bounty of the Bridgers campus food pantry. The Bobcats have successfully canned the Griz 18 of 21 years. According to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank, donations collected this year broke the previous record.

University of Montana

  • Pounds of food collected: 170,602.25

  • Total: 583,009.25 lbs

In total, 1,237,135.91 pounds of food was collected for families in need in Bozeman and Missoula.

In 2020, the University of Montana won the annual competition. However, the Bozeman community rallied back this year and was able to collect 71,117.41 more pounds of food than folks in Missoula.
