“What’s That Smell?” New MT Residents Complain About Strange Odor

Most people that move to Montana from big cities experience a rude awakening once they get here. Many longtime residents aren't the most welcoming to newcomers.

I'll admit, I'm not originally from Montana. Many readers have pointed out the fact that I'm from Idaho in the past, and that's true. I'm not ashamed of it at all. If you know anything about Idaho, it's very similar to Montana. People that live there care about the same things that Montanans do. We aren't that different when you really think about it.

I don't like big cities, therefore the Montana lifestyle suits me perfectly. I don't want to change anything. I just want to live in a place that isn't overcrowded and has plenty of room to roam. One thing that I've noticed is a lot of transplants complaining about the way things are done in Montana. It makes me laugh. After all, nobody forced them to move here. I'm sure those people would complain regardless of where they lived.

Montana has a long history in the cattle industry. You can drive anywhere in the state and you're guaranteed to see a bunch of cows along the way. I live in Manhattan, and there are a lot of cows in the area.

Last summer, I saw something online that caused me to break out in laughter. It was in August, and someone was complaining about a strange odor, and someone in the comments said "The only thing I smell is the cows!". It turns out that the person complaining had never lived near a cow pasture before, and the smell was the sweet aroma of cowpies wafting through the air. If Montana had an official smell, that would probably be it.
